CBDC GBP
The UK's digital pound explained — the Bank of England and Treasury's plans for a central bank digital currency, how it works, what it means for your money, and how it compares to crypto and other CBDCs worldwide.
Why a Digital Pound?
The Bank of England and HM Treasury have been exploring a UK central bank digital currency (CBDC) — informally known as the "digital pound" — since 2021. As commerce goes digital and cash usage declines, a CBDC would provide a new form of central bank money available to households and businesses, complementing physical banknotes and commercial bank deposits.
The digital pound is part of a global CBDC race: the European Central Bank is preparing the digital euro, China's e-CNY is already in pilot use, and over 130 countries are exploring CBDCs. This site explains the technology, the design choices, the privacy debate, and what it all means for UK consumers, businesses and banks.
